This is made even more apparent when a large quantity of switches needs to be upgraded for a project. IOS software image size has certainly increased over time. Newer switches, such as the Catalystuse an extremely large software image because they support so many features. For example, version Sitting and staring at the console as a TFTP file transfer occurs for an image of this size is nothing short of painful.
Most of the time, we will use TFTP to copy a new version of software to a switch. This is the lowest possible value, and this is used to ensure compatibility with older TFTP servers. Last week, we had to upgrade software on several Catalyst switches, so we performed one upgrade with this default block size setting of to illustrate what we're talking about. OK, let's do some quick math. As you can see in the above graphic, this MB file took 2, seconds to transfer.
So, 2, seconds divided by 60 equals 43 minutes. The truth is that most TFTP servers can accommodate a much larger block size than The maximum size that this Catalyst can support is a block size of So whenever we perform a file transfer, we first enter this command in global config mode on the switch:.

Once we entered that command, we performed the file transfer in the exact same method as before. But here are the results when using the maximum block size:.
That same MB file took seconds to transfer this time. If we divide seconds by 60 we get 5 minutes. This command will also work on most other modern Catalyst switch models, such as the X, X, chassis, C, etc. Did this tip work for you? What IT professional has the time to wait 43 minutes for a software upgrade?
So whenever we perform a file transfer, we first enter this command in global config mode on the switch: ip tftp blocksize Once we entered that command, we performed the file transfer in the exact same method as before.

A terminal emualation program can be used to back up and restore a configuration. This is a description of the procedure using Microsoft Hyperterminal Terminal Emulation software:. If the configuration needs to be copied from another router, connect to that router through the console or Telnet. Issue the terminal length 0 command in order to force the router to return the entire response at once, rather than one screen at a time. This allows you to capture the configuration without extraneous --more-- prompts generated when the router responds one screen at a time.
Issue the show running-config command, and allow time for the router to complete its response. You will see:. You can do this by dragging the cursor from before the first character to after the last character in the file while holding down the left mouse button.

It also provides several commands to help you manage software image and configuration files.
The default flash file system on the switch is named flash:. As viewed from the stack master, or any stack member, flash: refers to the local flash device, which is the device attached to the same switch on which the file system is being viewed.
In a switch stack, each of the flash devices from the various stack members can be viewed from the stack master. The names of these flash file systems include the corresponding switch member numbers. For example, flash3:as viewed from the stack master, refers to the same file system as does flash: on stack member 3.
Use the show file systems privileged EXEC command to list all file systems, including the flash file systems in the switch stack. No more than one user at a time can manage the software images and configuration files for a switch stack. These sections contain this configuration information:.
To display the available file systems on your switch, use the show file systems privileged EXEC command as shown in this example for a standalone switch. This example shows a switch stack.
In this example, the stack master is stack member 2; therefore flash2: is aliased to flash:. The file system on stack member 5 is displayed as flash5 on the stack master. Amount of free memory in the file system in bytes. You can copy a remote file to null to find its size. You can specify the file system or directory that the system uses as the default file system by using the cd filesystem: privileged EXEC command.
You can set the default file system to omit the filesystem: argument from related commands. For example, for all privileged EXEC commands that have the optional filesystem: argument, the system uses the file system specified by the cd command. By default, the default file system is flash:. You can display the current default file system as specified by the cd command by using the pwd privileged EXEC command.I would like to show you how to recover a Cisco switch ex.
